ONE CLEAR OPERATING QUESTION

Recorded opens define this ratio's denominator

250 clickers over 1,000 recorded openers gives 25%; no recorded openers makes the ratio undefined, not zero.

250 UNIQUE CLICKERS / 1,000 RECORDED OPENERS25.00%

250 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 25.00%. Recorded opens may include privacy preloads and clicks may include automated activity.

01

Use recorded unique openers as the denominator

Divide unique recipients who clicked by recorded unique openers from one matched campaign and reporting window, then multiply by 100. Do not use total clicks, summed link uniques, delivered messages or impressions.

02

Read the reported 25.00% example

250 unique clickers divided by 1,000 recorded unique openers equals 25.00%. This is report arithmetic, not proof that one quarter of human readers engaged.

03

Compare the right denominators

Use the email click-through rate calculator when you want unique clickers as a share of delivered emails rather than recorded openers. Use the email open rate calculator to inspect the separate recorded-opens-to-delivered ratio; recorded opens can still be affected by privacy preloading.

04

Keep tracking limits visible

Recorded opens may include privacy preloads and clicks may include automated activity. Zero openers makes CTOR undefined. Ratios above 100% retain the entered arithmetic with a scope/tracking warning, without inferring a cause, human engagement, creative impact or sales.

Questions, answered.

How is CTOR different from email CTR?

CTOR divides unique clickers by recorded unique openers. Email CTR uses delivered messages as its denominator, so the two ratios answer different reporting questions.

What happens when there are no recorded opens?

CTOR is not defined when the recorded unique-opener count is zero. The tool does not replace that undefined ratio with zero percent.

Does CTOR measure verified human engagement?

No. Privacy image preloads can affect recorded opens and automated systems can affect clicks; these counts do not verify human reading or creative effectiveness.
