ONE CLEAR OPERATING QUESTION

Compare hours at a declared standard rate

At rate 20, actual 60 hours minus allowed 50 hours gives 200 unfavorable; reversing the hour difference reverses its sign.

Compare hours at a declared standard rate
Allowed: 50 hours
Actual: 60 hours

10 extra hours × USD 20/hour = USD 200 unfavorable

Actual: 40 hours

10 fewer hours than allowed × USD 20/hour = USD 200 favorable

At rate 20, actual 60 hours minus allowed 50 hours gives 200 unfavorable; reversing the hour difference reverses its sign.

THE FIELD NOTES

Quick answer above. Better decisions below.

Use the result now, then read the practical notes for assumptions, examples, limitations, and the choices behind it.

100 UNITS × 0.5 HOURS; ACTUAL 60 HOURS; RATE 20USD 200.00 unfavorable

50 allowed hours; 10 extra hours × standard rate USD 20.00/hour = USD 200.00 unfavorable. This is not actual payroll savings. No FX conversion.

01

Use the standard allowed for actual output

Multiply actual output by standard hours per unit. Subtract those allowed hours from actual productive hours, then multiply by the standard hourly rate. Positive means unfavorable and negative means favorable under this stated convention.

02

Reconcile the 200.00 unfavorable example

100 actual units at 0.5 standard hours allow 50 hours. Actual 60 hours adds 10 hours at standard rate 20.00, or 200.00 unfavorable. The same difference is 1,200.00 minus 1,000.00 at the standard rate.

03

Keep other labor questions separate

Use the labor cost per unit calculator to examine labor spend per unit separately; an efficiency variance values hours at the standard rate rather than the actual wage bill. Use the manufacturing lead time calculator to examine elapsed production stages separately from labor-hours variance.

04

Do not infer causes from the variance

Use decimal productive hours from one matched job or cohort. Paid idle time, wage-rate changes and revised standards require other analysis. A variance is not evidence of employee conduct, quality or actual payroll savings; zero rate does not erase a time difference. All monetary inputs and results are USD only; no exchange-rate conversion is performed.

Questions, answered.

Which hours belong in the standard?

Use the standard hours allowed for the actual output produced: actual units multiplied by standard hours per unit, not the budgeted production volume.

What does a positive variance mean?

Under this tool's actual-minus-standard convention, a positive monetary variance is unfavorable and a negative one is favorable; neither identifies its cause.

Does this calculate wages or payroll savings?

No. It values an hours difference at your entered standard rate. Actual wage-rate variance, paid idle time and payroll calculations are outside this worksheet.
